A late goal from Jakub Sypek denied Marek Papszun a winning sendoff at Raków częstochowa, as Zagłębie Lubin secured a 1-0 victory on Sunday[1, 2, 3]. The result sees Zagłębie climb into the top five of the Ekstraklasa table as the Polish league prepares to pause for its winter break. A red card to Raków’s Adriano Amorim in the first half proved a pivotal moment in a tightly contested match[1, 2, 3].

Zagłębie Lubin spoiled Marek Papszun’s final home match in charge of Raków Częstochowa, securing a 1-0 victory and climbing into the Ekstraklasa’s top five. The result adds another layer of intrigue to the Polish league’s mid-season standings as teams prepare for a winter break.

Both teams entered the contest with motivation beyond just three points. A win for Raków would have sent them into the winter break as league leaders, while Zagłębie aimed to solidify their position as one of the league’s surprise packages – currently the only team unbeaten at home.

Amorim Sees Red

The match began with a sluggish pace, seemingly reflecting the approaching holidays. Zagłębie Lubin were without their leading scorer, Leonardo Rocha, as the on-loan Raków player was deemed too expensive to field against his parent club and didn’t even make the bench. Rocha had bagged eight goals in the first half of the season.

Raków started slightly brighter, but struggled to create clear-cut chances. Zagłębie’s Marcel Reguła headed a good opportunity just wide, with Bogdan Racovitan clearing the ball off the line. Jonatan Brunes responded with a decent strike from outside the box, but Jasmin Buric saved comfortably.

The defining moment of the first half arrived in the 34th minute. In a seemingly innocuous challenge, Adriano Amorim caught Igor Orlikowski in the face with an elbow. The on-field referee initially missed the incident, but VAR intervened, and after review, Amorim was shown a straight red card.

Despite being a man down, Zagłębie didn’t immediately retreat. Jakub Kolan fired a dangerous shot from 20 meters that narrowly missed the target. Raków countered with a Marko Bulat effort, earning a corner that ultimately came to nothing.

Shock in Częstochowa

The second half saw Leszek Ojrzyński introduce Kajetan Szmyt, who immediately made an impact with a driving run and cross to Michalisa Kosidis, but the Greek forward headed over the bar. Raków looked to exploit set pieces, but Zagłębie remained organized and thwarted their attempts.

For a long stretch, the game lacked a cutting edge. Zagłębie created a chance in the 74th minute, but Filip Kocaba’s shot was blocked, and Oliwier Zych gathered the rebound. Raków earned a free kick after a foul on Radwański, but Fran Tudor’s attempt sailed over the crossbar.

Just when a draw seemed inevitable, Zagłębie struck. Jakub Sypek, who had been on the pitch for just a few minutes after coming on as a substitute, received a brilliant pass from Kolan, drove into the box, and fired an unstoppable shot past the goalkeeper, giving the visitors the lead.

Raków pushed for an equalizer. In the 85th minute, Orlikowski fouled Svarnasa, but another free kick from around 20 meters failed to trouble the goalkeeper. Imad Rondic, among others, grew increasingly frustrated for the hosts. Michał Nalepa had a shot blocked from a subsequent attack, and Szmyt’s follow-up went out for a corner, which yielded no further threat. Lamine Diaby-Fadiga had one last opportunity, but Buric held his shot, and the referee blew the final whistle.

The victory lifts Zagłębie Lubin to fifth place in the Ekstraklasa table. Their 28 points after the first half of the season are just one shy of Raków’s total. While Raków’s form has remained strong since the announcement of Papszun’s departure to Legia, the coach’s final home game ended in disappointment, though they are still firmly positioned within the league’s top four.
