Zeynep Sönmez made history at the Australian Open on Tuesday, defeating Hungary’s Anna Bondar in straight sets to become the first Turkish athlete to reach the third round of a Grand Slam tournament.
The World No. 112 Sönmez faced off against Bondar, ranked No. 74, in the second round of the Melbourne tournament.
Sönmez powered past her opponent with a decisive 6-2, 6-4 victory in a match lasting one hour and 30 minutes. This breakthrough performance marks a significant milestone for Turkish tennis on the international stage. The 23-year-old broke Bondar’s serve four times throughout the contest and dominated in winners, 24 to 10.
