Ten nations have secured their place in the playoff for the 2026 FIFA World Cup in the European zone, with the remaining six spots to be determined tomorrow morning.

Slovakia and Poland are the latest teams to book their spots in the next phase, finishing as runners-up in their respective groups. With qualifying wrapping up, the stakes are high as teams battle for a chance to reach the expanded 48-team tournament.

Slovakia fell 6-0 to Germany in Leipzig on Tuesday, November 18, 2025, but still clinched second place in Group A with 12 points, three points behind Germany who qualified directly as group winners.

Poland secured second place in Group G with a 3-2 victory over Malta. However, their 17 points weren’t enough to overtake the Netherlands, who finished first with 20 points after a 4-0 win against Lithuania.

These two nations join Ukraine, Italy, the Republic of Ireland, Albania, the Czech Republic, Romania, Sweden, and Northern Ireland, who had already confirmed their playoff berths.

Just six slots remain, consisting of five runner-up positions and one spot allocated through the UEFA Nations League. Currently, Kosovo, Scotland, Turkey, Bosnia-Herzegovina, and North Macedonia occupy those remaining runner-up positions, while Wales holds the UEFA Nations League playoff place.

There’s still a possibility for these six countries to qualify directly for the World Cup through their respective groups, meaning the final playoff picture won’t be clear until UEFA qualifying concludes on Wednesday, November 19, 2025.

The semifinal and final matches of the UEFA zone playoffs are scheduled for March 26 and 31, 2026. The playoff format will be single-leg ties, with the higher-ranked team hosting. The playoff draw will take place on Thursday, November 20, at FIFA headquarters in Zurich.
