WAIDHOFEN/THAYA DISTRICT – As the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women is observed on November 25, the global ‘16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence’ campaign is underway. The initiative aims to raise awareness of gender-based violence and improve access to support services for those affected – a cause actively championed by the Austrian People’s Party (ÖVP) and its affiliated organizations.
No Tolerance for Violence
Governor Johanna Mikl-Leitner stated, “Violence against women has absolutely no place in Lower Austria. The dignity, rights, and safety of women must be fully respected and protected. We provide comprehensive support to women who are affected. In the coming weeks, we will focus on bringing this important social issue to the forefront.”
State Councilor for Family and Women’s Affairs Christiane Teschl-Hofmeister added, “Lower Austria has a very well-developed network of aid and counseling centers. Every woman seeking protection should receive prompt and streamlined assistance. We work towards this goal every day.”
Highlighting the importance of local resources for the district, Councilor Viktoria Hutter emphasized, “Violence often begins in secret. That’s why it’s so important to have visible points of contact – from the women’s counseling center in Waidhofen to the violence protection center in Zwettl and the women’s helpline. The ‘16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence’ campaign raises awareness and shows those affected pathways to safety.”
Emergency Contact Numbers
The Austrian People’s Party of Lower Austria and its affiliated organizations are focusing on increased awareness campaigns and publicizing key emergency numbers – including the Lower Austrian Women’s Telephone (0800 800 810) and the Women’s Helpline (0800 222 555). This campaign underscores the ongoing effort to combat domestic violence and provide support to victims.
