82-Year-Old Australian Astrophysicist to Compete in World Masters Powerlifting Championships

An 82-year-old astrophysicist from Canberra is set to represent Australia at the World Masters Powerlifting Championships in South Africa, demonstrating the power of strength training for healthy aging.

Ravi Sood, who took up weightlifting at age 70 to aid recovery from knee replacement surgery, now holds the Australian deadlift record for his age group. “Just the fact that I’m wearing Australian green and gold, for me, that’s fantastic,” Sood said. He is traveling to the championships with a goal to beat his previous national deadlift record of 115 kilograms, though he emphasized that representing his country is his primary focus. This competition highlights a growing trend of seniors embracing strength training for both physical and mental wellbeing.

Sood’s journey has been remarkable, overcoming not only knee issues but also a heart attack to continue pursuing his passion. His coach, Megan Hinchley, notes that Sood serves as a powerful role model. “It just shows that life doesn’t stop when you get older, that you can continue to have goals and to have purpose and to push yourself,” Hinchley explained. Strength training offers documented benefits for aging bodies, protecting against conditions like heart disease and osteoporosis, as detailed by the National Institute on Aging.

Fellow gym-goers, like Veronika Pasalic, are inspired by Sood’s dedication. “I want to be like Ravi when I grow up,” Pasalic shared, adding that seeing Sood lift significant weight motivated her to begin her own strength training journey. Sood is scheduled to compete later this month, and officials say his participation underscores the importance of accessible fitness programs for all ages.
