A family in Portugal is recovering after a suspected carbon monoxide leak sent four members to the hospital Sunday in Esposende. The incident, involving a father, mother, and two children, is prompting authorities to review safety regulations surrounding home heating systems as colder weather arrives in the region[[3]]. Preliminary investigations suggest the leak might potentially be connected to a recently serviced boiler or water heater, highlighting the potential dangers of improper maintenance and the importance of carbon monoxide detection[[1]].

A Portuguese family of four was hospitalized Sunday after falling unconscious in their home, authorities said. The incident, believed to be caused by carbon monoxide poisoning, is prompting a review of home heating safety protocols in the region.

According to reports, the family had returned home after dining out when the mother and their children went upstairs while the father remained on the ground floor. He discovered the three family members unconscious shortly after going upstairs and immediately called for help.

Emergency responders from the Cruz Vermelha das Marinhas provided initial treatment before requesting assistance from the Esposende Volunteer Fire Department.

The victims – two women, ages 28 and 56, and a 29-year-old man – were transported to Barcelos Hospital, where they remained under medical observation Sunday afternoon.

Police are investigating the source of the carbon monoxide, with early indications pointing to a recently repaired boiler or water heater. The equipment had undergone maintenance on Saturday afternoon.

The GNR, Portugal’s national republican guard, is investigating the incident.
