In the early hours of Sunday, April 26, 2026, a police officer in the Matam region of Senegal was seriously injured after being struck by a motorcycle during a routine traffic check.
The incident occurred around 11:30 p.m. On a busy road connecting Ourossogui to Matam, where the officer, identified only by his initials K. Ba, was conducting standard vehicle inspections. According to security sources, the rider of a Jakarta-style motorcycle approached at high speed and failed to avoid the officer, resulting in a violent collision.
The officer sustained multiple injuries, including an open fracture to the leg and a broken arm and was immediately rushed to the regional hospital in Ourossogui for emergency treatment. He remains in intensive care as of the latest reports.
Authorities have identified the motorcycle rider as D. Guèye, who was apprehended at the scene and placed in police custody. An investigation has been launched to determine whether the incident resulted from reckless driving or a deliberate refusal to comply with police signals.
This marks another troubling incident on the Matam-Ourossogui corridor, where similar collisions involving police officers and motorcycles have occurred in recent years, raising ongoing concerns about road safety and enforcement challenges in the area.
