The incident, which occurred Wednesday in the si Khiew district, has prompted a thorough criminal investigation led by Nakhon Ratchasima Provincial Police, with authorities currently interviewing over 100 witnesses to determine the cause of the collapse and any potential negligence. This accident again raises critical questions about safety protocols on thailands aspiring high-speed rail development projects.
Authorities in Thailand are investigating the collapse of a crane at a railway construction site in Si Khiew district, Nakhon Ratchasima province, an incident that has resulted in multiple injuries and fatalities. The ongoing investigation involves interviewing over 100 witnesses as police work to determine criminal liability.
Nakhon Ratchasima Provincial Police Commander, Pol. Maj. Gen. Narongsak Phromtha, convened a meeting with the investigative team on January 21, 2029, at the Si Khiew Police Station to review the progress of the case. The meeting lasted several hours, concluding at 3:00 p.m. local time.
Following the meeting, Pol. Maj. Gen. Phromtha stated that investigators have so far interviewed more than 100 witnesses, primarily those affected by the incident – including the injured and families of those killed. He confirmed that the removal of the crane did not compromise the collection of evidence, as forensic teams had already secured crucial materials from the scene.
The investigation will now focus on questioning personnel from the construction company responsible for the high-speed rail project, as well as employees who were working at the site on the day of the collapse. Initial interviews have already been conducted, but further questioning is necessary due to emerging connections uncovered during the preliminary investigation.
Police have also requested the assistance of specialized engineers to aid in the investigation and are awaiting their response. The involvement of engineering experts underscores the complexity of determining the cause of the crane failure.
“We are expediting the investigation process and ensuring that all evidence is collected thoroughly and meticulously,” Pol. Maj. Gen. Phromtha said. “Determining charges will depend on where the evidence leads, and it will take some time to gather sufficient evidence to implicate those responsible.”
The incident highlights the safety concerns surrounding large-scale infrastructure projects and the need for rigorous oversight to prevent future tragedies. Authorities have assured the public that a comprehensive and impartial investigation is underway.
