Health officials in Jalisco, Mexico are taking preventative measures in over 2,000 schools following a measles outbreak, including mandatory mask-wearing and increased vaccination efforts. Measles is a highly contagious viral infection that can lead to serious complications, making swift public health responses crucial.

Vaccination and Prevention Measures in Jalisco Schools

More than 1 million doses of the measles vaccine have been administered across the state, as Mexico has confirmed 8,332 measles cases and 26 deaths nationwide. The Jalisco Secretary of Health and the Jalisco Secretary of Education implemented preventative measures at the start of the outbreak, including student vaccinations and regular disinfection of school surfaces. When a suspected case is identified, epidemiological investigations are launched, and in-person classes are suspended for two weeks, transitioning to virtual learning if the case is confirmed.

Mandatory mask-wearing is now in effect in the following municipalities:

  • Guadalajara
  • Zapopan
  • San Pedro Tlaquepaque
  • Tonalá
  • Tlajomulco de Zúñiga
  • El Salto
  • Ixtlahuacán de los Membrillos

Masks are also recommended for schools at the middle and high school levels. Ventilation and classroom cleaning are being emphasized alongside mask use as complementary preventative measures.

Vaccination Progress and Coverage Goals

Héctor Raúl Pérez Gómez, head of the Jalisco Secretary of Health, stated that over 1.2 million doses of the measles vaccine have been administered since 2025. The goal is to administer 350,000 doses per week to interrupt the chain of transmission. The Secretary of Health aims to reach at least 2 million doses, having currently achieved 50% of that target. This aggressive vaccination campaign reflects the urgency of controlling the outbreak.

Juan Carlos Flores Miramontes, Secretary of Education, emphasized that the education system can contribute to containing the virus through discipline and shared responsibility. He recommended that parents and guardians not send their children to school if they are experiencing symptoms and urged teachers to monitor student health.

Symptoms and Risks of Measles

Measles typically presents with a high fever, cough, runny nose, and a rash that spreads from the head to the rest of the body. The infection can lead to serious complications, including pneumonia, blindness, hearing loss, seizures, and motor or intellectual disabilities.
