Dutch Short Track Dominates in Milan, Van ‘t Wout Crowned “Magical Specialist”

MILAN, Italy – The Netherlands continued its stunning run at the Winter Games in Milan, with Jens van ‘t Wout leading the charge to a historic medal haul in short track speed skating. The Dutch team has firmly established itself as the dominant force in the sport, outpacing South Korea – the previous powerhouse – by a significant margin with five gold medals to their opponent’s two.

Van ‘t Wout secured his third gold medal of the Games on Friday, prompting an emotional response from head coach Niels Kerstholt. “Jens is a magical specialist with an instruction manual,” Kerstholt told reporters, acknowledging the unique approach required to work with the star skater. He clarified that the “instruction manual” refers to Van ‘t Wout’s preference for independent analysis and the need to keep him focused. “You have to keep him close and create sure he stays engaged. He’s a specialist. I love that. You have to sometimes let him work his own magic. Then that guy is capable of wonders.”

Van ‘t Wout’s golden performances came in the 1000m, 1500m and as part of the men’s relay team. He also added a bronze medal in the 500m to his collection. The Dutch team’s success wasn’t limited to Van ‘t Wout, as Xandra Velzeboer claimed gold in both the 500m and 1000m, and Melle van ‘t Wout earned a silver medal in the 500m.

The relay victory was particularly poignant, breaking a long-standing drought for the Dutch team. The win was described as “magical” and “a fairytale come true” by those involved. Friso Emons also contributed to the golden tally, securing a medal as part of the winning relay team.

Kerstholt, visibly moved by the team’s achievements, admitted he was almost at a loss for words. He praised the entire technical staff, emphasizing the collaborative effort behind the success. “Actually, I should stop now,” he joked, before adding, “But no, I definitely won’t be doing that.” The Dutch team’s performance at the Games is considered exceptionally difficult to surpass, solidifying their position at the top of the sport.

Beyond the medals, the team also took time to honor those who came before them, dedicating their success to former teammates Sjinkie, Daan, and Freek. This gesture underscored the strong bond and shared history within the Dutch short track program.
