An armed man was fatally shot by law enforcement after illegally entering the grounds of Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida on Sunday, according to a U.S. Secret Service official. The incident raises fresh security concerns surrounding the former and current U.S. President, and comes amid a climate of heightened political tension.
The Secret Service reported that the man, estimated to be in his twenties, was observed near the north entrance of the Mar-a-Lago property around 1:30 a.m. Eastern Time, carrying what appeared to be a rifle and a gasoline can.
During a brief press conference, authorities detailed the confrontation, stating that they asked the intruder to drop the gasoline can and the rifle. Palm Beach County Sheriff Ric Bradshaw said the suspect then placed the can down and allegedly raised his weapon as if to fire, prompting agents to open fire and “neutralize the threat.” The man died at the scene. Law enforcement officials displayed an image of the seized rifle during the press conference but did not release further details about the suspect’s identity.
Previous Security Incidents
This incident follows two reported attempts to target Donald Trump during the 2024 presidential campaign. In July, a shooting occurred at a campaign rally in Pennsylvania, where a spectator fired a shot, hitting Trump in the ear and resulting in the death of another attendee.
Two months later, another potential assassination attempt occurred on a golf course in Florida. The Secret Service faced criticism in connection with both of those events.
The United States has a high rate of civilian gun ownership, with more guns than people. Approximately one in three adults owns at least one firearm, and nearly half of all adults live in a household with a gun.
