Development of the Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic remake at Saber Interactive continues, years after the project was first announced.

In a recent interview with IGN, Saber Interactive’s Executive Creative Director Tim Willits responded to a question about the project’s future with a succinct statement: “Yes, it’s still in development. That’s all I can say.”

The update is likely to reassure the dedicated fanbase of the classic role-playing game originally developed by BioWare, the studio known for the Mass Effect and Dragon Age series. The reimagining was first revealed in 2021, but there has been no official news or public demonstration of the game for the following five years. The continued development signals the enduring appeal of the Star Wars universe and the demand for high-quality remakes.

A report from December 2025 by Game File indicated that Aspyr is no longer leading the remake’s development, with the project reportedly now under the direction of Mad Head Games, the team currently working on Hellraiser: Revival.

The same article also noted that plans extend beyond a reimagining of the original KOTOR, with discussions underway regarding the development of a remake of its sequel, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic 2.

Lucasfilm Games Vice President Douglas Reilly stated, “Juliet was the codename for a project where we were looking at doing a full remake of KOTOR II with modern graphics and modern gameplay, keeping the story and characters and the overall content of KOTOR II, but rebuilding it to run on modern hardware and with updated graphics and all of that.” He added, “That was something we were discussing with Aspyr.”

Whether those comprehensive plans to redevelop the entire Knights of the Old Republic series will ultimately come to fruition remains uncertain, but perform appears to be ongoing on Saber’s project for the original installment. This continued investment in classic franchises demonstrates the potential for revitalizing beloved titles for a fresh generation of gamers.

This news follows the unveiling of Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic during The Game Awards 2025, a brand-new single-player role-playing game set in a galaxy far, far away, led by former KOTOR director Casey Hudson. The question remains whether players will experience this new title before the Knights of the Old Republic remake is released.
