Léo Áquilla, 55, voiced strong objections during a recent taping of SuperPop (RedeTV!) regarding the network’s decision to bring in Cariúcha, 42, to replace Luciana Gimenez, 56, as the show’s host.
What Happened
The journalist passionately advocated for Simone Garuti, 48, the current interim host, to be permanently appointed to the role. “It’s an injustice not to supply this program to this woman, who has been here for 25 years! I recorded the program today and said, ‘If they cut it, I’ll post it online, because it gets more views than here!’” he exclaimed on set, in footage shared by columnist Fábia Oliveira.
Áquilla even threatened to withdraw from future appearances on *SuperPop* if his concerns weren’t addressed. “Never call me to reach to *SuperPop* if Simone Garuti isn’t the presenter. With another presenter, I won’t set foot here again! This was the last program I did and from here I also bid farewell.”
The dispute highlights the often-turbulent dynamics behind the scenes in Brazilian television. Áquilla’s public protest underscores the strong loyalty and advocacy that can develop between on-air personalities and their colleagues.
The situation unfolded as the network prepares for Cariúcha’s official debut on April 1st. During the taping, Áquilla made his feelings known, passionately defending Garuti’s long-standing commitment to the show, where she has worked since 2001, including serving as a reporter and developing special segments.
