Two suspects have been arrested in connection with the fatal stabbing of a local political figure at an airport in Indonesia’s Maluku province, police confirmed.
The victim, identified as Nus Kei, served as chairman of the Golkar Party’s regional branch in Southeast Maluku. He was attacked at Langgur Airport in the Maluku Tenggara regency and later died from his injuries, authorities said.
Police detained two individuals shortly after the incident, linking them to the assault. While investigators have not released the suspects’ identities, they confirmed the arrests were made in the immediate aftermath of the attack.
Authorities urged the public to remain calm and avoid spreading unverified information, emphasizing that the investigation is ongoing and that retaliation or provocation could hinder the process.
Early reports suggest the attack may have been motivated by a long-standing personal dispute, though police have not officially confirmed a motive. Investigators continue to gather evidence and interview witnesses as part of the inquiry.
The incident has drawn attention to regional political tensions in Maluku, where local leadership disputes occasionally escalate into violence. Community leaders have called for peace and urged respect for the legal process as authorities perform to determine the full circumstances surrounding the killing.
