Alvis Hermanis Weighs Artistic Leadership at New Riga Theatre Against Political Ambitions

The intersection of high art and governance is becoming a central theme for Alvis Hermanis, the artistic director of the New Riga Theatre (JRT), as he navigates the complexities of upcoming elections. The renowned director is currently facing questions regarding his future at the helm of one of Latvia’s most prominent cultural institutions.

Hermanis has indicated that he does not intend to abandon his creative roots immediately. Regarding the upcoming New Riga Theatre season, he stated, “As for me personally, as I already said, I plan to combine work in parliament and the work of the artistic director of JRT.” This dual-role approach highlights a challenging attempt to balance legislative duties with the demanding nature of artistic leadership.

However, the director acknowledged that a significant political shift could force a change in plans. He noted that Hermanis may have to step away from the New Riga Theatre if he wins the election and a specific political outcome is reached. Specifically, he explained, “If the people vote for change and MMN gains the prime minister’s post, then, of course, my theater matters will have to be paused for a while and I will most likely be replaced by the head of the literary department Margarita Zieda,” adding that this arrangement would be similar to current practices at the National Theatre.

Despite the potential for political upheaval, the theater is moving forward with an ambitious production slate. The season’s first new production, “VĒJDZIRNAVAS” (Windmills), written by Inga Ābele and directed by Hermanis, is scheduled to premiere on October 2. Described as a substantial play centered on Latvia, the production underscores Hermanis’s ongoing commitment to exploring national identity through art.

The momentum continues throughout October with two additional premieres: “TŪLIJA UN DA VINČI,” directed by Anna Viduleja, and “NEUZTICĪGIE,” directed by Inga Tropa. This surge of new work demonstrates the theatre’s resilience and creative output regardless of its leadership’s political trajectory.

Looking further ahead, several other projects are currently in the preparation phase. These include “BAGĀŽA,” directed by Gatis Šmits; “ZENTA UN KONSTANTĪNS,” written by Inga Ābele and directed by Kristīne Krūze; and “PARADŽANOVS,” directed by Aiks Karapetjans. Hermanis is also slated to direct “GARS UN PUTEKĻI,” a new play from the author of “Dzimšanas dienas kūkas.”
