Maine Governor Declares State of Emergency Ahead of Potential Major Storm

Maine Governor Janet Mills declared a state of emergency today, October 8, 2025, in anticipation of a significant storm system expected to bring high winds and heavy rainfall to the state.

The declaration, issued at 20:26 EDT, authorizes the use of state resources to prepare for and respond to the storm’s impacts. Coastal areas are particularly vulnerable to potential flooding and power outages. The National Weather Service has issued a high wind warning for much of the Maine coastline, predicting sustained winds of up to 60 mph with gusts exceeding 70 mph.

“The safety of Maine people is our top priority,” Governor Mills stated in a press release. “This state of emergency will allow us to mobilize resources quickly and efficiently to support communities as they prepare for and respond to this storm.” The declaration also activates the Maine Emergency Management Agency (MEMA) to coordinate state response efforts. Residents are encouraged to review emergency preparedness plans and secure loose outdoor objects. You can find more information on preparing for severe weather from Ready.gov.

Power companies are staging crews and equipment to address potential outages, and shelters are being prepared in several counties. This storm arrives during peak foliage season, potentially impacting tourism and travel throughout the region; learn more about Maine’s tourism industry here. State officials will continue to monitor the storm’s progress and provide updates as needed.

The state is urging residents to avoid unnecessary travel during the height of the storm and to heed all warnings from local authorities.
