Plane Crash in Kenya Kills 11, Including Tourists

A plane carrying mostly foreign tourists crashed in the coastal Kwale region of Kenya today, October 28, 2025, resulting in the deaths of all 11 people on board.

Mombasa Air Safari confirmed that eight Hungarian and two German passengers were among those killed, along with the Kenyan pilot. The crash occurred in a hilly, forested area approximately 40 kilometers (25 miles) from the Diani airstrip. Authorities initially reported the crash at 5:30 a.m. local time, but the transport minister later stated it happened at 8:35 a.m. The cause of the crash is currently under investigation.

Witnesses at the scene reported hearing a loud explosion and discovering unrecognizable remains. Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán expressed his condolences on social media, stating, “What a tragedy! Our sincere condolences to families of the Hungarians who died in the plane crash in Kenya.” The aircraft, a Cessna Caravan, burst into flames upon impact. This incident raises concerns about aviation safety in the region, as a 2018 audit by the International Civil Aviation Organization noted below-average performance in accident investigation within Kenya.

The flight was en route to the Maasai Mara National Reserve, a popular destination known for the annual wildebeest migration and a major contributor to Kenya’s tourism industry. Mombasa Air Safari operates 13-passenger capacity Cessnas to various tourist locations. Investigating agencies are continuing to examine the wreckage and gather information to determine the factors that led to this devastating crash; further updates will be provided as they become available.
