Massive Police Raid in Rio de Janeiro Leaves Dozens Dead

A large-scale police operation targeting a major drug trafficking gang in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, resulted in the deaths of at least 60 suspected criminals and four police officers, officials reported today.

Yesterday’s raid, involving approximately 2,500 police and soldiers, focused on the Red Command gang within the Complexo de Alemao and Penha favelas. Authorities seized 93 rifles and over half a ton of drugs during the operation, which included the use of helicopters and armored vehicles. Rio’s state Governor Claudio Castro described the operation as the largest in the city’s history, stating that 60 suspects were “neutralized” and 81 were arrested. The violence underscores the ongoing struggle against organized crime in Brazil, which impacts communities and governance across the nation.

The operation was met with resistance from gang members, who authorities say deployed drones to launch projectiles at police. Governor Castro posted a video on X, formerly known as Twitter, showing a drone dropping what he described as a bomb. “This is how the Rio police are treated by criminals: with bombs dropped by drones,” he said. Civil police officials stated on X that the “cowardly attacks by criminals against our agents will not go unpunished.” The United Nations’ human rights body has called for investigations into the deaths, reminding authorities of their obligations under international human rights law, as reported by the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights.

Schools and universities were closed as a result of the violence, and reports indicate that suspected gang members blocked roads and commandeered buses. Human Rights Watch in Brazil called the events “a huge tragedy” and urged the public prosecutor’s office to investigate each death. Authorities have requested federal support to combat crime, and Justice Minister Ricardo Lewandowski will attend an emergency meeting in Rio on Wednesday to address the situation.
