Connecticut Manufacturers Seek Solutions to Rising Costs, Workforce Challenges

Connecticut’s manufacturing sector, a key driver of the state’s economy, is increasingly focused on supply chain management as a strategy to navigate rising costs, trade policy shifts, and a tightening labor market.

Recent surveys indicate that 95% of Connecticut manufacturers reported increasing costs last year, while 66% have experienced negative impacts from tariffs and trade policy changes. Addressing these challenges is critical, as the sector generates over $34 billion in output annually, representing approximately 12% of the state’s gross state product. According to Associate Professor Tao Lu of the University of Connecticut’s School of Business, a holistic approach to optimizing resources is essential. “Supply chain management provides a holistic approach to optimizing resources and processes across the entire value chain,” Lu explained. “A range of SCM tools can help manufacturers manage rising costs.”

Workforce shortages are also a significant concern, with 82% of manufacturers reporting difficulty finding and retaining workers. SCM can help companies utilize their existing workforce more effectively through strategic staffing and process analysis, and even through the implementation of automation technologies, as seen with Walmart’s plans to open automated distribution centers. Lu noted that a successful supply chain manager needs to be both analytical and people-oriented, and emphasized that a business background isn’t always required, with many successful leaders coming from fields like engineering or economics. UConn recently launched a new master’s program in supply chain management to address the growing demand for professionals in this field.

The demand for supply-chain managers in New England is considered a “hot spot” for the profession, having increased 52% in the last five years. Officials say that continued investment in supply chain strategies will be vital to maintaining the competitiveness and resilience of Connecticut’s manufacturing base.
