Apple TV+ Series “Pluribus” Declares Itself “Made by Humans” in Credits

The first two episodes of “Pluribus,” a new series from “Breaking Bad” creator Vince Gilligan, premiered on Apple TV+ yesterday, and the production included a notable disclaimer in its closing credits: “This show was made by humans.”

The series stars Rhea Seehorn as Carol Sturka, an author who is among the last people on Earth immune to an extraterrestrial virus that transforms the population into a relentlessly optimistic collective. Gilligan has been vocal about his aversion to artificial intelligence, stating, “I will never use it, no offense to anyone who does,” and noting he completed the script nearly a decade ago, before the rise of readily available AI tools. This move highlights a growing concern within the entertainment industry about the increasing use of AI in content creation and the potential impact on artistic integrity.

The credits disclaimer comes as AI-generated content becomes more sophisticated and difficult to identify. The show has already been renewed for a second season, and while Gilligan doesn’t have a definitive plan, he suggested to Discussing Film that “maybe four seasons” would be the maximum length, adding, “who the hell knows?” The debate over AI’s role in filmmaking is intensifying, with some advocating for transparency in production processes – see more about the Writers Guild of America’s stance on AI.

Apple has not commented on the disclaimer beyond the series premiere. Production on the second season of “Pluribus” is expected to begin in early 2026.

Apple TV premiered the first two episodes of “Breaking Bad” creator Vince Gilligan’s highly anticipated and critically acclaimed new series, “Pluribus,” the other day.

In the series, Rhea Seehorn plays author Carol Sturka, a woman who is one of the last people on Earth immune to an extraterrestrial virus that transforms everyone in the world into a relentlessly optimistic hive mind.

Those watching the series through the credits found a note saying “This show was made by humans,” a direct swipe at productions that rely on AI.

Previously, Gilligan has slammed AI as he discussed the series – saying he hasn’t used ChatGPT: “I will never use it, no offense to anyone who does,” before explaining he wrote the series nearly ten years ago and wasn’t thinking about AI at the time.

The credits disclaimer comes as artificial intelligence is becoming trickier to spot and more widely used. Such disclaimers will likely become more prevalent in the future.

A second season of the show has already been greenlit, and while Gilligan doesn’t have an overall length in mind for the show, he tells Discussing Film that “maybe four seasons” would be the max. However, “who the hell knows?”.
