A significant shakeup is underway at Aston Martin, as the Formula 1 team prepares to empower design guru Adrian Newey with increased authority. Starting in 2026, Newey will assume the role of team principal, replacing Andy Cowell and taking full control of the team’s technical operations, including race-day execution.
As previously reported, Cowell’s tenure as team principal was coming to a close. However, Aston Martin has opted for an internal solution, entrusting Newey with a role he’s never held before and passing over external candidates like Chris Horner. Cowell will transition into a newly created position as Chief Strategy Officer, reporting directly to Lawrence Stroll, and will leverage his extensive experience – including a successful run leading Mercedes’ engine division – to optimize collaborations with Aston Martin’s partners: Honda, Aramco, and Valvoline. This move marks the end of Cowell’s direct involvement with race-day operations after a year as both team principal and CEO.
Newey on His Expanded Role
“Over the past nine months, I’ve been impressed by the individual talent within our team. I’m looking forward to taking on this additional responsibility as we position ourselves to be as competitive as possible in 2026, when we’ll face a completely new set of challenges alongside the significant impact of the new regulations,” Newey stated. “Andy’s new role, focused on integrating the new power unit with our three key partners, will be crucial in this process.”
Cowell’s Perspective
“After implementing the structural changes necessary for the transition to a complete team and laying the groundwork for Adrian and the organization as a whole, now is the right time for me to take on a different role as Chief Strategy Officer,” Cowell added. “In this role, I will contribute to optimizing the partnership with Honda, Aramco, and Valvoline, and ensuring the seamless integration of the new power unit, fuel, and chassis.”
Stroll’s Statement on the Changes
“Andy has been an exceptional leader this year,” emphasized Stroll. “He’s been focused on building a world-class team and fostering an environment where everyone works well together, prioritizing the car at the center of everything. This leadership change is a mutual decision made in the best interest of the team. We are all eager to continue working with him in his new capacity as Chief Strategy Officer. I am also pleased that Adrian will be assuming the role of team principal, which will allow him to fully leverage his creativity and technical expertise. Both of these changes will ensure the team is in the best possible position to maximize its strengths.”
