Archer Aviation Purchases LA Airport for $126 Million, Eyes 2028 Olympics

Archer Aviation today announced the $126 million cash purchase of Hawthorne Airport in Los Angeles County, establishing a key operational hub for its planned air taxi network ahead of the 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

The San Jose-based company intends to utilize the airport not only as a base for its “Midnight” aircraft – designed to carry up to four passengers at speeds up to 150 mph – but also as a testing ground for next-generation AI-powered aviation technologies. These include AI-driven air traffic and ground operations management systems, according to a company release. Archer was previously named the Official Air Taxi Provider of LA28, aiming to transport athletes and visitors quickly between Olympic venues.

Hawthorne Airport’s location provides strategic access to major sporting and entertainment facilities like SoFi Stadium, The Forum, Intuit Dome, and Downtown Los Angeles. This move signifies a growing investment in electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) technology, which promises to revolutionize urban transportation and potentially alleviate traffic congestion in sprawling metropolitan areas like Los Angeles; learn more about eVTOL aircraft from the Federal Aviation Administration. Archer is also a host city supporter for the 2026 World Cup matches in LA and an Official Super Bowl LXI Host Committee Partner.

While FAA certification remains a key hurdle for Archer and competitors like Joby Aviation, the company plans to begin commercial service in the United Arab Emirates later this year. Archer officials stated the purchase actively expands their presence in Los Angeles and builds excitement for the arrival of air taxis in the region.
