“Steering to Japan, I can cut, I want to thank.”

TV4’s automated captioning system went awry during a New Year’s Eve broadcast of “Bingolotto” when Finnish artist Käärijä’s hit song “Cha cha cha” played – attempting to translate the lyrics from Finnish to Swedish.

TV4’s AI captioning attempted to translate Käärijä’s Finnish song “Cha, cha, cha” into Swedish.

Some of the AI-generated lyrics seemed to fit the “Bingolotto” theme.

Automated captioning, used by several television networks, has experienced glitches on multiple occasions. This incident highlights the ongoing challenges of real-time translation technology.

During a Lucia broadcast on SVT, the AI translation claimed the Lucia procession was singing:

“Watered my birds for. In Iraq, Iran and Iraq. Hello!”

Instead of the original lyrics: “He waters his foals five, all for the bright star.”

The mishaps continued during “Bingolotto’s” New Year’s bingo.

When Kings and Queens performed a Eurovision medley alongside Andreas Lundstedt and Robin “Elecktra” Werner, the setlist included Käärijä’s Finnish Eurovision entry, “Cha cha cha.”

Attempting to Translate Finnish to Swedish – Goes Awry

That’s when the subtitles took another turn.

The AI attempted to translate the Finnish lyrics into Swedish.

Käärijä sings “Rankka viikko ja paljon pitkii päiviä takan,” but according to the AI captions, it read “Steering to Japan I can cut, I want to thank.”

The comical translations continued throughout the performance.

“Mielenkiintona piña colada ja rata” became “Shirts Pina Colada. I steer” and “Tää jäinen ulkokuori on aika tuhota” was rendered as “Talents gaps. Different Toyota.” It appeared the AI was even attempting to incorporate words related to “Bingolotto.”

The Finnish Lyrics and Correct Swedish Translation
