Bournemouth’s Alex Scott Reflects on Rapid Rise to Prominence
Midfielder Alex Scott, who completed a £25 million move to Bournemouth from Bristol City in 2023, today recounted the whirlwind beginning of his professional football career, detailing a trial period with Bristol City in December 2019 that followed an impressive start to his senior footballing journey with Guernsey FC.
Scott described the initial trial as “chaos,” explaining he trained with both the under-18s and the first team within days. Remarkably, he played for Guernsey FC in London on Wednesday and then featured for Bristol City Under-18s, scoring a hat-trick, on Friday. He quickly became a key player for the Robins, making 83 league appearances as a teenager, often deployed as a wing-back or even as an attacking midfielder, earning him the nickname ‘the Guernsey Grealish’ due to his ball-carrying ability. His versatility and impact at a young age have drawn comparisons to established Premier League stars like Jack Grealish.
At the end of the 2022-23 season, Scott’s performances were widely recognized, earning him the EFL Championship’s young player of the season award, a place in the division’s team of the year, and both Bristol City’s player and young player of the year accolades. His former manager, Nigel Pearson, expressed strong belief in Scott’s potential, stating in May 2023, “No doubt about that, I think he’ll play for England and I think he’ll go on to the top of the game,” as reported by BBC Radio Bristol. Scott’s rapid ascent highlights the increasing importance of scouting networks identifying talent in non-league football.
Bournemouth officials have stated they are pleased with Scott’s development and integration into the team, and anticipate a continued upward trajectory for the young player as he establishes himself in the Premier League.
