AC Milan’s Coppa Italia campaign ended Friday with a 1-0 defeat to Lazio at the Stadio Olimpico, a result that manager Massimiliano Allegri attributed to unforced errors adn a failure to capitalize on possession. The loss marks a setback for the Rossoneri, who now turn their focus to serie A play and the upcoming Supercoppa Italiana in Riyadh later this month. Lazio will advance to face Bologna in the coppa Italia quarterfinals in February.
Rome –
AC Milan manager Massimiliano Allegri expressed disappointment following his team’s defeat to Lazio in the Coppa Italia round of 16. The Rossoneri conceded a goal that proved difficult to overcome.
Playing at the Stadio Olimpico on Friday, December 5, 2025, a header from Mattia Zaccagni in the 80th minute was enough to send Lazio through to the quarterfinal, where they will face Bologna in February.
The goal was met with controversy, as Milan felt they should have been awarded a goal kick, believing a deflection off Lazio’s Alessio Romagnoli occurred before the ball went out of play. However, the incident could not be reviewed by the Video Assistant Referee.

Regardless, Milan’s defensive marking came under scrutiny as Zaccagni was left unmarked to meet the cross. Maurizio Sarri’s side avenged a similar defeat to Milan in Serie A just days prior.
“Lazio won the game because we had more difficulties than we did on Saturday, as we made several wrong passes in the first half, giving them opportunities,” Allegri told Sport Mediaset after the match, as quoted by Football Italia.
Milan controlled possession with 58 percent of the ball, but managed only two shots on target. Lazio, in contrast, fired four shots toward the goal and found the back of the net with one, despite having less of the ball.
“The match was static; whoever broke the deadlock would win, and we didn’t take our chances. We conceded from a corner that we should have defended better.”
“We were in control, but we made 3-4 easy mistakes, giving away free kicks and corners. This also happened against Cremonese and Pisa this season, when we were dominant and didn’t capitalize, which is dangerous. We need to improve.”
The loss leaves Milan with the Supercoppa Italiana and Serie A as their remaining competitions this season. Despite the setback, Allegri remains optimistic about the future.
“Of course, we’re angry about being eliminated in the round of 16, it’s disappointing, but we have to look forward. We have two Serie A matches before heading to the Supercoppa Italiana,” Allegri explained.
The 2025 Supercoppa Italiana will be held from December 18-22 in Riyadh. Milan qualified as finalists from last season’s Coppa Italia. They will face Napoli in the semifinal. The winner will then play either Bologna or Inter Milan in the final.
Before traveling to Saudi Arabia, Milan’s immediate Serie A schedule includes a match against Torino on December 9, followed by a home game against Sassuolo on December 14.
