google is quietly limiting users’ ability to fully remove pre-installed apps on Android devices, now only allowing the uninstallation of updates through the Google Play Store. The change, first reported by Phone Arena, impacts both visible and system-level applications, potentially affecting the level of customization Android users have come to expect. While users can still revert to prior app versions, the move signals a broader industry trend toward greater control by tech companies over the software experience on mobile devices. Google is together developing a remote app management feature, offering users expanded control over app installations and uninstalls across thier devices.
Google is now preventing users from fully uninstalling system apps on Android devices, instead limiting them to uninstalling updates. A recent change to the Google Play Store now replaces the “Uninstall” button for pre-installed apps with a button that simply opens the application.
The shift, first noted by Phone Arena, also impacts system apps not visible in a user’s app list, such as Android Auto and Pixel camera services. The change is currently live in version 49.1.32-31 of the Play Store, as observed on a Pixel 6 Pro device.
Users who wish to remove updates from pre-installed apps will need to navigate to Settings > Apps > See all apps, then locate the specific system app.
For example, selecting the “Photos” app will lead to its app information page. From there, tapping the three-dot menu in the upper right corner reveals the option to “Uninstall updates,” which will remove previously installed updates. This change reflects a broader trend of tech companies exerting more control over the software environment on user devices.
Why Remove a System App Update?
Users may choose to revert to an earlier version of an app to eliminate bugs or address dissatisfaction with a new user interface or other changes. This capability allows for a degree of customization and control over the user experience.
Google is also preparing to introduce a feature allowing users to remotely uninstall or install apps from the Google Play Store. This functionality will include listings for both system and non-system apps, displaying all Android devices logged into a user’s Google account.
Each device listed will feature either an “Uninstall” or “Install” button, allowing users to remove or download the app on a specific Android device. This upcoming feature offers greater flexibility and control over app management across multiple devices.
