Angelique Kerber Wins Luxembourg Ladies Tennis Masters Title in Comeback Performance

Former World No. 1 Angelique Kerber secured a remarkable victory at the Luxembourg Ladies Tennis Masters yesterday, defeating newly retired Alizé Cornet 1-6, 6-3, 10-7 in a thrilling title match.

Kerber’s path to the championship included wins over defending champion Kirsten Flipkens in the quarterfinals and Barbora Strycova in the semifinals, showcasing her return to form just four months after giving birth to her second child. Cornet, also making her debut at the event, advanced to the final after Kim Clijsters was forced to withdraw due to an Achilles injury. The tournament, held at the Coque arena, featured a competitive field including Eugenie Bouchard and Anabel Medina Garrigues.

The Luxembourg Ladies Tennis Masters has evolved from a traditional WTA Tour stop into an exhibition event over the past four years, building on a 25-year legacy of hosting top players. Tournament director Danielle Maas and her team reimagined the format in 2022, creating a weeklong showcase of WTA role models and a celebration of women’s tennis, inspired by the principles established by Billie Jean King. This event is increasingly popular with players looking to maintain their competitive edge, even during or after retirement.

During the week, special ambassador Daniela Hantuchova participated in a panel discussion, emphasizing the fairness and equality within women’s tennis. “I feel blessed, because I feel that I come from a platform — which is the WTA, women’s tennis — where I’ve been so privileged to work and do what I love in an environment where opportunities are pretty equal,” Hantuchova stated. Kerber’s win earned her a €50,000 prize from a total purse of €100,000, and she has confirmed her intention to defend her title in 2026, signaling a continued commitment to the WTA tour.

Kerber later shared on Instagram her gratitude for the warm welcome and the joy of returning to competitive play, balancing her role as a mother with her passion for tennis.
