Anthony Joshua has been discharged from the hospital following a traffic accident in Nigeria on Monday that tragically claimed the lives of two people.

“Anthony Joshua has been discharged. Though heartbroken and deeply affected by the loss of two close friends, he was deemed clinically fit to continue his recovery at home,” stated Lagos State Commissioner for Information, Gbenga Omotoso.

Joshua and his mother paid their respects at a Lagos funeral home before the bodies of the deceased were prepared for repatriation, Omotoso added.

The accident occurred on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, a major route connecting Ogun and Lagos states, when the Lexus SUV carrying Joshua collided with a stationary truck improperly parked on the shoulder of the road, according to Afolabi Odunsi, spokesperson for the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) of Ogun.

Witnesses told local newspaper “The Punch” that Joshua was a passenger in the vehicle, accompanied by another individual in the back seat. The driver and another passenger died as a result of the crash with the parked vehicle. Joshua’s security detail was traveling in a separate vehicle behind them at the time of the incident.

The 36-year-old Joshua traveled to Nigeria after his December 19th bout against Jake Paul, a YouTuber-turned-boxer, which Joshua won by knockout in the sixth round. The victory was a significant return to form for Joshua after a 15-month absence from the ring.

The heavyweight is expected to face longtime rival Tyson Fury later this year, a highly anticipated matchup that could crown an undisputed champion.
