Apple Expands Clinical-Grade Hearing Aid Features to More European Markets

Apple is further integrating healthcare capabilities into its consumer ecosystem, announcing on May 12, 2026, that its Hearing Aid features are now available for AirPods Pro 2 and AirPods Pro 3 users in Czechia, Italy, and Romania. This expansion allows the earbuds to serve as an over-the-counter alternative to traditional hearing aids, blurring the line between high-end consumer audio and medical assistance technology.

The system is specifically designed for adults aged 18 and older who experience perceived mild to moderate hearing loss. By adjusting ambient sounds and voices in real-time, the AirPods Pro can mitigate hearing loss and improve the user’s overall auditory experience. This move highlights a broader industry trend toward making clinical-grade health tools more accessible through everyday wearable devices.

To personalize the experience, users can complete a Hearing Test directly on their iPhone or iPad. The process takes approximately five minutes and utilizes pure-tone audiometry based on advanced acoustic science. The system first ensures a proper ear seal and checks background noise levels before playing a series of tones that the user responds to via the screen. For those who prefer professional medical data, the feature also allows for the import of audiogram results provided by a hearing healthcare professional.

Beyond basic amplification, the update introduces several specialized audio enhancements:

  • Media Assist: This feature uses the personalized hearing profile to optimize the sound levels of phone calls, videos, and music for better clarity.
  • Loud Sound Reduction: To prevent potential hearing damage, this tool automatically reduces high-decibel ambient noise when the user is in Adaptive or Transparency modes.

From a technical standpoint, the Hearing Aid capabilities require AirPods Pro 2 or AirPods Pro 3 paired with a device running iOS 26 or iPadOS 26 (or later). Apple has noted that the battery life for the earbuds is up to 10 hours when the Hearing Aid feature is in use. All resulting data from the Hearing Test is stored privately and securely within the Health app, where users can monitor their hearing trends over time.

In addition to the audio updates in Europe, Apple also announced the expansion of Apple Watch hypertension alerts to Israel. Available on the Apple Watch Series 9 and Ultra 2 (and subsequent models), this feature monitors heart rate sensor data over a 30-day period to alert users to signs of chronic high blood pressure.
