Apple is reportedly considering a meaningful shift in its iPhone product release strategy, possibly moving to a twice-annual cycle as early as 2026. This shift would see continued fall launches of the numbered “iPhone” series alongside a new, more affordable “iPhone Air” line arriving in the spring.
Apple is planning a shift in its iPhone release strategy, moving away from a single annual launch event to a more frequent, twice-yearly release cycle, according to recent reports.
For years, Apple has unveiled its new iPhone models in a highly anticipated autumn event. However, that could change as early as 2026. A report from Bloomberg’s Power On newsletter details the company’s plans to stagger iPhone releases, effectively doubling the number of new devices introduced each year.
The company intends to continue launching its flagship “iPhone 18” series – including a rumored foldable model – in the fall, as it traditionally does. However, more basic models, potentially branded as “iPhone 18e” or “iPhone Air,” are expected to arrive roughly six months later in the spring of 2027.
This staggered approach, according to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, would allow Apple to better distribute its marketing and development resources, and smooth out revenue streams throughout the year, reducing reliance on the fall launch event. Apple has not yet publicly commented on the report.
Speculation about a potential shift in Apple’s release cycle began even before the anticipation surrounding the iPhone 17 and the 2025 iPhone Air. The latest report provides a more concrete look at the company’s strategy. Notably, the new “Air” models will not follow the standard annual numbering scheme, signaling Apple’s intention to establish this line as a distinct product category.
Beyond the iPhone Air and foldable models, Apple is reportedly exploring further diversification of its iPhone lineup. Future plans may include devices with curved displays and under-display front-facing cameras, potentially culminating in a new, top-tier “next-generation” iPhone model slated for release in 2027. This move reflects a broader trend in the smartphone industry towards offering consumers a wider range of options to meet diverse needs and price points.
