LACMA Art+Film Gala Raises Record $6.5 Million, Celebrates Coogler and Corse Amidst Dodgers Victory
Los Angeles, CA – The Los Angeles County Museum of Art’s (LACMA) Art+Film gala concluded yesterday evening, raising a record-breaking $6.5 million to support the museum’s film programming and other initiatives, while simultaneously celebrating honorees Ryan Coogler and Mary Corse.
The event, held at LACMA, drew a star-studded crowd including David Geffen, Bob Iger, George Lucas, Doja Cat, Leonardo DiCaprio, and Eva Chow, all amidst an unexpected backdrop: a gripping Game 7 of the World Series featuring the Los Angeles Dodgers. The program was temporarily paused as attendees followed the game on their phones, erupting in cheers when the Dodgers secured a back-to-back championship with a 4-4 victory. “We’re art, film, creativity, all deeply intertwined,” said LACMA CEO Michael Govan, emphasizing the unique synergy of the event.
Filmmaker Ryan Coogler, honored for his contributions to cinema, delivered an emotional speech reflecting on his journey from Oakland to Los Angeles and the importance of community. He dedicated his award to the late Michael Latt, acknowledging his early support, and highlighted the role of institutions like the Sundance Institute in fostering artistic growth. Angela Bassett presented Coogler with his award, praising his ability to balance “the epic and cinematic with moments of quiet and intimacy.” Artist James Turrell offered the tribute to Corse, calling her “one of the keepers of the light.” The gala’s fundraising success will allow LACMA to further integrate film into its curatorial programming, expanding its reach and influence within the art world.
Guests enjoyed a Michelin-starred Korean steakhouse meal prepared by chef David Shim of COTE New York, served on Ginori 1735 porcelain, and many were seen admiring the event’s floral arrangements. The event was sponsored by Gucci, with newly installed creative director Demna making his first appearance. Officials stated that the funds raised will be immediately allocated to support LACMA’s expanding film initiatives and community outreach programs.
