Austria’s preparations for the upcoming World championship took a hit Thursday as they fell 4-3 in overtime to norway in Ferlach. the exhibition contest, part of a five-day training camp, saw a dominant performance from Austrian forward Konstantin Hutzinger, who scored all three of his team’s goals on the powerplay, though it wasn’t enough to secure the win. Head Coach Philipp Pinter will now have to weigh the lessons learned – and address discipline concerns – as he finalizes his roster.

A thrilling overtime goal by Niklas Olsen lifted Norway past Austria 4-3 on Thursday, December 4, 2025, in a hard-fought exhibition matchup as both teams prepare for upcoming international competition. The game, played in Ferlach, showcased a dominant powerplay performance from Austria’s Konstantin Hutzinger, but ultimately, Norway capitalized on key opportunities.

Hutzinger proved to be a force with the man advantage, scoring all three of Austria’s goals while on the powerplay. Norway, however, answered with two powerplay goals of their own, highlighting the importance of special teams in the contest.

Austria jumped out to an early lead, with Hutzinger finding the back of the net twice within the first six minutes to give his team a 2-0 advantage. Strong penalty killing and solid goaltending from Patrick Graschner helped Austria maintain the lead through the first period, despite facing a lengthy two-man disadvantage between the 14th and 18th minutes.

Norway battled back in the second period, with Elias Straume Vatne scoring a powerplay goal and Nils Sunde adding another to tie the game at 2-2. Austria quickly responded, once again turning to Hutzinger, who restored their lead before the end of the period.

The third period saw a flurry of penalties, with both teams struggling to maintain discipline. Norway capitalized on a 5-on-3 opportunity early in the frame, tying the score at 3-3. Despite further penalties, Austria managed to hold on and force overtime.

Olsen then sealed the victory for Norway in the extra period, completing his second goal of the game and securing a 4-3 win. The result underscores the competitive nature of the international hockey landscape as teams fine-tune their rosters.

Head Coach Philipp Pinter: “We had a really good week here in Ferlach. The guys gave it their all and we can draw the right lessons from these two tests. Today’s performance was better than against Slovenia, even though we lost in the end. Overall, our discipline wasn’t ideal. Now we have the difficult decision of how to finalize the World Championship roster.”
