A hiker was startled by an unexpected encounter with a brown bear on a popular trail in central Slovakia, an incident captured on video and shared widely online.

The footage, recorded by the hiker, shows the bear emerging from the forest and approaching the trail before pausing and retreating into the woods. The animal appeared curious but non-aggressive, according to observers who viewed the clip.

The incident occurred on a well-used path near the town of Liptovský Mikuláš, a common destination for outdoor enthusiasts in the Žilina Region. Local authorities confirmed the video’s authenticity but said no injuries were reported and the bear did not make contact with the hiker.

Wildlife experts note that brown bears are native to Slovakia’s Carpathian Mountains and occasionally venture near trails, especially in spring and early summer when they emerge from hibernation. While attacks are rare, officials routinely advise hikers to make noise, carry bear spray, and avoid surprising animals at close range.

The video has drawn attention on social media, with many users expressing relief that the encounter ended peacefully. Conservation groups used the moment to remind the public of the importance of coexisting with wildlife in shared natural spaces.

Slovakia’s State Nature Conservancy monitors bear populations and works to minimize human-wildlife conflict through public education and habitat management. No further action was taken in this case, as the bear retreated without incident.
