Hungarian cinematic icon Béla Tarr, renowned for his philosophical and visually arresting films, has died at the age of 70. The director had been battling an illness for some time, and his passing was confirmed by director Bens Fliegauf on behalf of the family.

Tarr elevated filmmaking to an art form, becoming a towering figure in world cinema. Over a career spanning from 1979 to 2011, he directed nine feature films, each marked by his distinctive long takes and stark black-and-white aesthetic. His debut was 1979’s Family Nest, and his final work was 2011’s The Turin Horse. He also created documentaries, television films, and short films.

The director received a Lifetime Achievement Award at the 27th International Film Festival of Kerala (IFFK) in 2022, where six of his films were screened. Tarr’s influence extends beyond the screen, inspiring filmmakers with his unique vision and commitment to exploring profound themes.
