in a landmark decision with significant implications for democratic norms in Latin America, former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro has begun serving a 27-year prison sentence following a Supreme Court conviction [[1]]. Bolsonaro was found guilty of orchestrating a coup attempt to overturn the results of the 2022 presidential election, making him the first former Brazilian president to be imprisoned for attacking the country’s democratic institutions [[2]]. the case, which culminated in his arrest tuesday, has ignited both celebration from supporters of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and condemnation from Bolsonaro’s allies.

Former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro began serving a 27-year prison sentence on Tuesday, following a Supreme Court order. The case marks a significant moment for Brazilian democracy, as it is the first time a former president has been incarcerated for attempting to subvert the country’s electoral process.

Bolsonaro is currently being held in a police facility, where he was initially taken after his arrest. Authorities determined there was a flight risk, and he has not yet been transferred to a permanent correctional institution.

According to reports from the Associated Press, Bolsonaro is residing in a 12-square-meter cell equipped with a bed, private bathroom, air conditioning, a television, and a desk.

On his first day in custody, Bolsonaro reportedly tampered with his ankle monitor, prompting notification to the judge overseeing the case. The former president claimed he was experiencing a breakdown, attributing it to hallucinations caused by his medication, as reported by Telex.

The 70-year-old Bolsonaro was sentenced in September to 27 years in prison for attempting a coup to remain in power after losing the 2022 election. His arrest came after his lawyers requested house arrest citing health concerns.

The legal team argued that Bolsonaro’s condition – including recurring intestinal problems stemming from a 2018 stabbing during a campaign event – would be life-threatening under prison conditions. He was also recently diagnosed with skin cancer in September, further fueling their concerns.
