New Bookstore, The Open Book, Opens in Pasadena Amidst Mall Challenges
An independently owned bookstore, The Open Book, launched its Pasadena location in The Paseo shopping center this month, offering a wide selection of new and used books, but is already facing headwinds due to low foot traffic in the mall.
The bookstore celebrated its grand opening on October 1st, and is positioned across the street from the well-established Vroman’s bookstore. Branch Manager Serena expressed hope for a revitalization of The Paseo, recalling its busier past. “I just remember everyone used to come here after school. I don’t know when it changed, but it would be cool to see it come back,” she said. The Open Book is part of Schwabe Books, a California company founded in 1993 to provide affordable books to educational institutions, now extending that mission to the public. This arrival comes as independent bookstores nationwide navigate a changing retail landscape and increasing competition from online retailers.
The Open Book distinguishes itself through its affordability and commitment to literary access, featuring dedicated sections for banned books. “We actively seek to bring awareness to these titles,” the manager noted, highlighting the ongoing issue of book censorship in the United States. A cashier reported slow business yesterday afternoon, attributing it to the overall lack of pedestrian activity at The Paseo, a trend impacting other businesses in the center. The store is currently undergoing minor renovations to enhance its ambiance, incorporating antique decorations alongside Halloween displays.
The Paseo has struggled to attract consistent foot traffic, relying heavily on destination retailers like West Elm and Equinox, rather than providing everyday shopping needs. However, staff at the Regal cinema, located within The Paseo, have reported a renewed interest in moviegoing, with some patrons visiting The Open Book before or after screenings. The Open Book’s ability to secure an affordable lease in the struggling mall may signal a turning point for the center, potentially attracting a more community-focused retail mix. You can find more information about The Paseo on their official website.
The Open Book is currently open Monday through Saturday from 11:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., and Sunday from 11:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., and officials are optimistic that the store will establish a strong reputation within the Pasadena community.
