Brazilian professional goalkeeper Thomazella is leveraging his decades of experience on the pitch into an entrepreneurial venture, launching his own line of goalkeeper gloves, THZ Sports. The 35-year-old Mirassol player developed the gloves out of personal frustration with existing market options, aiming to create a product balancing grip, durability, and comfort. The brand’s unexpected growth highlights a growing trend of athletes taking control of their own equipment and design, while simultaneously planning for life after competition.

Brazilian goalkeeper Thomazella is preparing for life after professional soccer by launching his own line of goalkeeper gloves, THZ Sports. The 35-year-old, currently with Mirassol, has developed four distinct models, blending his on-field experience with an entrepreneurial spirit.

The idea for THZ Sports originated in 2020, stemming from Thomazella’s frustration with the existing options available to professional goalkeepers. He found it difficult to find gloves that balanced grip, durability, and comfort.

“When the grip was good, the durability and comfort left something to be desired; when the comfort was excellent, the grip was lacking,” Thomazella explained in an interview with Globo Esporte. “I never found the ideal balance. Since I’ve always had to buy my own gloves, I decided to turn that investment into something bigger: create my own brand, using all the experience I’ve gained as a professional goalkeeper to develop what, in my view, would be a complete glove.”

More than a year of development went into the project, culminating in Thomazella taking the field in August 2021 wearing a pair of gloves he designed himself. What began as a personal project quickly evolved into a business venture as teammates and opponents alike praised the quality of his creation.

“The initial idea was to produce gloves only for my own use, without any commercial intent,” Thomazella said. “However, many people started asking me about the gloves I was wearing, saying they were beautiful, different, and couldn’t find them for sale. I would explain that it was my own brand and not available for purchase. Over time, the demand increased significantly, and I realized there could be a business opportunity. I decided to produce a few extra units to test the market, especially since several new glove brands have emerged in the country in recent years. Now, we work with a limited number of models, prioritizing quality and brand identity. We currently offer four models, in various colors and two cut types: Resilience, Faith, Focus, and Winner. The names represent the pillars that have shaped my career as an athlete.”

Despite his burgeoning business, Thomazella remains committed to his professional playing career. He recently renewed his contract with Mirassol for another season, following the club’s impressive fourth-place finish in the Brasileirão last year – a remarkable achievement for a team recently promoted from Série B and operating on a limited budget. While in his third season with the São Paulo-based club, the Italian-Brazilian player is yet to make his debut, serving as a backup to Walter and Alex Muralha.
