Bucks Trim Roster, Release Second-Round Pick Tyler Smith
The Milwaukee Bucks have reportedly cut second-round draft pick Tyler Smith, narrowing their roster to 15 players ahead of Wednesday’s season opener against the Washington Wizards.
The decision, made today, allows the Bucks to save approximately $500,000 in salary cap space and suggests the team favors retaining Andre Jackson Jr. and Amir Coffey for the final roster spots. Jackson had $800,000 of his $2.2 million salary guaranteed, while Smith’s contract was worth $2 million for the current season. This move also concludes Smith’s guaranteed contract with the team after just one year.
Amir Coffey, who initially joined the Bucks on an Exhibit 9 contract, will have his deal converted to a standard one-year veteran’s minimum contract. Exhibit 9 contracts are non-guaranteed, offering the Bucks flexibility to waive Coffey before the January 10 league-wide guarantee date if needed. The Bucks have been active in roster adjustments this offseason, recently trading first-round pick AJ Johnson to the Wizards. Milwaukee’s current roster reflects a focus on veteran experience, particularly in the frontcourt with Giannis Antetokounmpo, Brook Lopez, Bobby Portis, Kyle Kuzma, and Jericho Sims.
Smith appeared in 23 games for the Bucks, averaging 5.3 minutes and 67 total points. This roster cut marks the second draft pick from the 2024 class to depart Milwaukee, signaling a challenging path for young players to secure a role on a contending team. The Bucks front office has not indicated any further roster moves are planned before Wednesday’s game.
