The memory crisis is in full swing and has now reached SSDs and graphics cards, following memory. Against this backdrop, many are reconsidering whether a desired purchase is truly necessary. I recently found myself questioning whether to replace my 1 TB main drive. While I do have a 2 TB SSD as a secondary drive, it’s a SATA model. I decided against the upgrade. Why? With careful management, 1 TB remains sufficient for essential applications, and less frequently used programs run satisfactorily on the older SSD. I even have several older drives stored away. If needed, I could easily offload data to external options. Interestingly, an old SSD can be repurposed to create what is commonly known as an external hard drive.

we’ve repeatedly featured a model from Benfei. According to our observations, it was recently available for €8.48 during sales, regularly priced at €8.99, with a suggested retail price of €10.99. Now, the price has dropped again to €7.99. Price tracker Keepa indicates this is the lowest price ever recorded on Amazon.

Does assembly require tools like those favored by MacGyver? Not at all. The case assembles without any tools. It simply snaps together. The Benfei is designed for standard 2.5-inch drives, and may too accommodate older laptop hard drives in the SATA format, if you happen to have one.

Particularly convenient: the enclosure offers both a USB-C and a USB-A port, allowing it to be connected to mobile devices like tablets and smartphones, as well as traditional computers. The manufacturer’s specifications are as follows:

  • Function: 2.5-inch SATA hard drive enclosure with Type-C and Type-A for use as an external USB hard drive.
  • Speed: up to 5 Gbit/s and UASP
  • Design: tool-free installation, Plug & Play, Hot-Swap capable.
  • Compatibility: For 7/9.5-mm HDDs and SSDs up to 6 TB under Windows, Linux and macOS.
  • Warranty: 18-month manufacturer’s warranty with customer service.

Price is valid for a limited time

For a limited time, Amazon is offering the aforementioned €7.99. An external drive is therefore available for very little money, provided you have a discarded SSD lying around. Note: According to the product page, the offer is only valid until February 14th. There, you’ll also uncover a second model with a detachable cable – USB-C on one side, USB-C plus -A on the other. This is currently available for €8.99, but cost this much in mid-January. .
