Phillies President Questions Bryce Harper’s Return to Elite Form
Philadelphia Phillies president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski has publicly questioned whether star outfielder Bryce Harper can regain his previous elite level of play, following a season marked by diminished performance.
Harper, who turned 33 yesterday, saw his OPS drop to .844 – his lowest since 2016 – and his batting average fall to .261, his worst since 2019. Dombrowski acknowledged Harper remains a quality All-Star caliber player, but expressed uncertainty about a return to dominance. “He didn’t have an elite season like he’s had in the past,” Dombrowski said. “I guess we only find out if he becomes elite or he continues to be good.” This comes as the Phillies contemplate their offseason moves after another postseason disappointment.
Despite missing a month due to a wrist injury, Harper’s overall production declined, and he struggled in the National League Division Series against the Los Angeles Dodgers, going 3-for-15 with no RBIs. Manager Rob Thomson believes Harper is highly motivated to improve, stating, “I think he’s highly motivated to have the best season of his career next year.” The Phillies’ recent playoff struggles highlight the need for their key players, like Harper, to perform at their best; the team has not won a World Series since 2008. Dombrowski also addressed the team’s broader outlook, noting a 96-win season but acknowledging the need to improve October performance. He indicated the organization isn’t planning a massive overhaul despite several key free agents, including Kyle Schwarber and J.T. Realmuto, and stated the team will likely extend manager Rob Thomson beyond his current contract. The Phillies are also monitoring the recovery of pitcher Zack Wheeler, who is expected to return after May following surgery. Dombrowski stated the organization will continue to evaluate the team’s needs and work towards a solution to break their postseason malaise, emphasizing the importance of Harper’s performance in that effort.
