Canucks Defeat Capitals 4-3 in Sunday Afternoon Match
The Vancouver Canucks defeated the Washington Capitals 4-3 yesterday, October 19, 2025, in a Sunday afternoon game at Capital One Arena.
Elias Pettersson opened the scoring for Vancouver just 59 seconds into the first period, followed quickly by goals from Tyler Myers and Kiefer Sherwood to give the Canucks a 3-0 lead. Teddy Blueger extended the advantage early in the second period before Ryan Leonard scored a power-play goal for the Capitals, narrowing the gap. Jakob Chychrun, assisted by Hendrix Lapierre, and John Carlson, with Charlie Lindgren pulled for an extra attacker, added goals for Washington, but the comeback fell short.
The Capitals struggled to establish consistent play in the first period, falling behind early due to a combination of quick Canucks goals and unfavorable bounces. Despite a stronger second period where they outshot Vancouver 22-5 at five-on-five, they were unable to overcome the early deficit and the strong goaltending of Thatcher Demko. This loss comes as the Capitals attempt to solidify their position in a competitive Metropolitan Division. For more on NHL standings, visit NHL.com.
Following the game, discussion centered on a controversial hit by Tom Wilson and a failed challenge by the Capitals that resulted in a penalty. Coach Peter Laviolette is expected to address these issues in tomorrow’s practice. The Capitals will next face the Seattle Kraken on Tuesday night at home, continuing their homestand before a trip to Columbus to play the Blue Jackets. You can find the Capitals full schedule here.
