Google Photos is rolling out AI-powered portrait touch-up tools that make skin smoothing, eye brightening and quick facial edits easier on Android. The update includes skin texture refinement, blemish removal, eye brightening, and teeth whitening—features that typically require third-party apps or desktop software. According to Google’s official announcement, the tools aim to make quick, subtle fixes accessible to everyday users without needing professional editing skills. Google is making a play for the portrait editing crowd. The company just launched a set of touch-up tools in Google Photos that bring beauty-focused editing capabilities into its native image editor—no third-party apps required. Google’s blog post emphasizes that the tools are designed for “quick, subtle fixes” rather than dramatic transformations. It’s Google’s attempt to strike a balance between giving users control over their portraits while avoiding the heavily filtered aesthetic that’s drawn criticism on social platforms. The distinction might seem semantic, but it reflects a broader industry shift toward more naturalistic editing tools that enhance rather than dramatically alter photos. Behind the scenes, Google is leveraging the same computational photography prowess that powers features like Magic Eraser and Portrait Light. The company’s spent years building machine learning models that can identify faces, map facial features, and apply selective adjustments—capabilities that now extend to these touch-up tools. It’s the same technology stack that helps Pixel phones capture better portraits in low light, just repurposed for post-processing. Google Photos is expanding access to Magic Editor to all Pixel devices. All Google Photos users on Android and iOS will secure 10 Magic Editor saves per month. To go beyond this limit, you’ll need a Pixel device or a Premium Google One plan (2TB and above). Magic Editor: Reimagine your photos with the help of generative AI. Last year, we launched Magic Editor on Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro. Using generative AI, this editor makes it simple to do complex photo edits with simple and intuitive actions, like repositioning your subject or turning the sky from gray to blue. Now we’re expanding access to Magic Editor to all Pixel devices. Starting on May 15, many of our AI-powered editing tools—like Magic Eraser, Photo Unblur and Portrait light—will be available to anyone using Google Photos, no subscription required. You’ll also be able to access these features on more devices, including Pixel tablets. Photo Unblur: Clear up those blurry shots to relive your favorite moments with greater clarity. Magic Eraser: Remove photobombers and other distractions with a few taps. Portrait light: Adjust the position and brightness of light in portraits.
