Following a period of heightened economic instability, labor negotiations are underway across Turkey as workers push for wage increases to offset persistent inflation. Several industries face potential disruptions as unions representing manufacturing, automotive, and other sectors engage in collective bargaining with employers.A recently reached agreement between the United Metal-Workers’ Union (Birleşik Metal-İş) and CAVO Otomotiv in Kocaeli offers a potential model for averting widespread work stoppages, raising the minimum wage to 83,000 Turkish Lira-roughly $2,600 USD-plus benefits. The outcome of these negotiations will be closely watched as they could considerably impact Turkey’s economic outlook in 2026.
Labor negotiations between worker unions and employers are intensifying across Turkey following the new year, with several industries facing potential work stoppages.
In regions including Kocaeli, workers have threatened to strike over perceived low wage increase offers. However, a recent agreement reached at CAVO Otomotiv, organized by the United Metal-Workers’ Union (Birleşik Metal-İş), offers a potential roadmap for resolving these disputes.
LOWEST WAGE INCREASED TO 95,000 TL
The collective bargaining agreement with CAVO Otomotiv raises the minimum worker salary to 83,000 Turkish Lira (approximately $2,600 USD as of January 26, 2024). When factoring in tax exemptions, fuel allowances, and other social benefits, the total monthly compensation for the lowest-paid workers reaches 95,000 TL. This agreement comes as Turkish workers grapple with high inflation and a declining purchasing power.
The United Metal-Workers’ Union announced the agreement with the following statement:
“The collective agreement at CAVO Otomotiv was signed with the determined approval and high satisfaction of our members. In the factory, where all wages and social rights are paid clearly, the average net wage and bonus together amount to 83,000 TL, and with the addition of regular tax exemptions, fuel payments, etc., it reaches 95,000 TL net. We thank all those who contributed, especially our members.”

WORKERS CELEBRATE WITH TRADITIONAL DANCE
Employees at CAVO Otomotiv celebrated the agreement with a traditional Turkish folk dance, known as a “halay,” demonstrating widespread approval of the new terms. The signing of the agreement effectively ended a potential strike, and workers have now returned to their positions.
The successful negotiation at CAVO Otomotiv could set a benchmark for other ongoing collective bargaining discussions across the country, as unions seek to secure improved compensation packages for their members amid economic pressures.
