OpenAI is responding to user concerns and reports of potential advertising appearing within its popular ChatGPT chatbot. Following shared screenshots suggesting sponsored suggestions-including one for Target-company officials clarified that no advertising is currently being tested [[3]]. Responding to Shared Screenshots
The discussion began when former xAI employee Benjamin De Kraker shared a screenshot appearing to show a suggestion to shop at the U.S. retail chain Target within a ChatGPT conversation. This led some users to believe OpenAI was testing an advertising feature. ChatGPT and similar large language models are rapidly evolving, and the potential for integrated commerce is a key area of development.
Nick Turley, who leads ChatGPT development at OpenAI, refuted these claims. In a post on X, he stated that the company is not currently testing advertisements and that the images are either misinterpretations or do not represent advertising. “We aren’t testing ads in ChatGPT,” Turley wrote.

Turley emphasized that if OpenAI were to introduce advertising to ChatGPT, it would be done with a planned and transparent strategy.
App Suggestions Mistaken for Ads
Other OpenAI employees have also worked to address the confusion. Daniel McAuly explained that what users perceived as advertisements were actually suggestions for apps launched in connection with the company’s DevDay event earlier this fall. During DevDay, OpenAI unveiled a new platform allowing ChatGPT to integrate with services like Spotify, Target, and Booking.com.

Research director Mark Chen announced in a separate post that OpenAI has temporarily disabled the app suggestions following user feedback. However, some users have discovered code within the Android app referencing features related to advertising. The implications of this discovery are currently unclear, and OpenAI has not yet provided further comment.
