Program Details and Eligibility Criteria

In May 2026, Chile’s Ministry of Housing and Urbanism (MINVU) announced results for its 2025 rent subsidy program, benefiting 448 families in Antofagasta, with a focus on vulnerable populations and older adults. The initiative, part of broader efforts to address housing insecurity, includes both standard and special calls, offering up to 95% coverage of monthly rent for eligible households.

Program Details and Eligibility Criteria

The “Arriendo a Precio Justo” program, distinct from traditional rent subsidies, involves the state acting as the landlord for modern, regulated housing. Eligible families must be registered in the Registro Social de Hogares (RSH), have a minimum savings of 5 UF (approximately $190,000), and not own another property. Monthly rent cannot exceed 25% of a household’s income. Projects are concentrated in Santiago’s central areas and Antofagasta, aiming to reduce commuting costs for middle-class workers.

“The subsidy of rent allows families to significantly reduce their monthly expenses, providing greater stability and housing security while they advance in their life projects,” said Jorge Olivares Puentes, the regional minister of housing in Antofagasta, via elnortero.cl.

2025 Results and Regional Impact

In 2025, 212 families were selected under the standard rent subsidy call, with a regional investment of 36,040 UF, while 236 families qualified for the special call targeting seniors and individuals with disabilities. The latter received 90–95% of their rent covered, with 213 beneficiaries over 60 years old and 23 under 60 with disabilities. The program’s focus on the 40% most vulnerable segment of the RSH highlights its social equity goals.

“This benefit represents a concrete support for hundreds of families in our region, allowing them to access adequate housing while advancing toward a definitive housing solution,” added Andrea Merino Herrera, director of Serviu Antofagasta, per Diario El America.

How to Apply and Future Outlook

Applications for the 2026 program are conducted online via the MINVU’s official portal, requiring updated RSH records. While the standard subsidy for existing rentals remains pending, the “Arriendo a Precio Justo” model expands access to state-built housing. Officials emphasize its role in reducing housing stress, particularly in regions like Antofagasta, where living costs and rent pose significant challenges.

“The program reflects a commitment to support families in need, especially in areas where housing affordability is a critical issue,” Olivares Puentes stated, underscoring the initiative’s alignment with national housing strategies.

As the 2026 rollout approaches, the focus will shift to expanding availability and ensuring transparency in selection processes. With housing insecurity remaining a pressing concern, such programs highlight the state’s growing role in bridging the gap between economic vulnerability and stable living conditions.
