A new MBC variety show, “Extreme 84,” hit a snag before its premiere when cast member Choo Sung-hoon was forced to withdraw after suffering a fractured toe. The unexpected injury occurred just one day before the scheduled departure for the show’s filming location.

On the November 30th broadcast of “Extreme 84,” Choo appeared at the airport using crutches, immediately raising concerns among viewers.

“I had an accident while riding a jet ski and fell in a strange way. I broke two bones,” he explained. “Because of the change in air pressure, the pain could worsen on the plane, so I may need surgery depending on how things go.”

Choo also revealed he had made a quick trip to the emergency room before heading to the airport. “I won’t be able to join you all, but I came to help in any way I can,” he said.

Following an emergency meeting, the production team and remaining cast members determined continuing the schedule was impossible. Choo expressed his regret, saying, “We were supposed to go with three of us, and I’m so sorry.” Lee Giyang visibly shared in the disappointment. Ultimately, Lee Giyang and Kwon Hwa-woon were the only two who departed for South Africa.

Upon arriving in South Africa, Lee Giyang began acclimating to the local climate while traveling to the marathon’s location. He and Kwon Hwa-woon quickly demonstrated a unique chemistry, providing moments of levity. Later that night, after arriving at their accommodations, Lee began journaling about the race. “I’m more worried about finishing than I am excited,” he wrote. “But I won’t give up. I’ll finish, even if I have to walk.”

On the morning of the race, Lee stated, “The goal is to finish. I didn’t deliberately think about the terrible future that might unfold. It’s my first trail marathon, so finishing is more important than ranking.” He also expressed excitement about running through the habitat of Africa’s “Big Five” – lions, elephants, buffalo, leopards, and rhinoceroses.

Wearing bib number 45, Lee Giyang prepared thoroughly, even bringing a reusable silicone cup. After exchanging greetings with runners from around the globe, he launched into his first-ever trail marathon with the sound of the starting gun.

Lee Giyang’s challenging marathon journey can be seen on “Extreme 84” every Sunday night at 9:10 PM.
