Coco Gauff Advances to China Open Semifinals, Faces Anisimova
Coco Gauff defeated Eva Lys in straight sets today, securing her place in the semifinals of the China Open for the third consecutive year.
The world number three and two-time Grand Slam champion overcame the German opponent 6-3, 6-4 in a match lasting one hour and 28 minutes. Gauff broke Lys’ serve three times in the opening set and maintained a strong first serve percentage of 78% throughout the match. “I’m happy with how I played. She’s a tough opponent and she hit some incredible shots on the run, but I tried my best to play aggressive and good tennis,” Gauff said after the match. She added, “I think staying confident in my game [was important]. Not being too passive when I had the lead, I played one passive point in the last game but after that I played good tennis.”
Gauff’s performance comes after a mixed Grand Slam season, which saw her triumph at the French Open but experience early exits at Wimbledon and the US Open. Her advancement to the semifinals makes her the highest-ranked player remaining in the tournament. She will now face fellow American Amanda Anisimova, who is enjoying a career year.
Anisimova reached the semifinals by defeating Jasmine Paolini 6-7 (4-7), 6-3, 6-4, securing her sixth semi-final appearance of the year. The result sets up an intriguing all-American clash with Gauff as both players vie for a spot in the final.
Gauff and Anisimova will compete in the semifinals later this week, with the winner progressing to the championship match.
