- Coop will reduce discounts on food items starting January 6th.
- Current 50-percent promotions will become 40 percent.
- Store managers will be able to offer discounts earlier in the day going forward.
Swiss supermarket chain Coop is adjusting its discount strategy, reducing price cuts on food items beginning January 6th. The move impacts the retailer’s popular “Use instead of wasting” program, designed to minimize food waste by offering reduced prices on products nearing their expiration dates.
Currently, shoppers can find items marked down by 50 percent with red labels. Under the new system, those discounts will be reduced to 40 percent, while 25-percent labels will be adjusted to 20 percent. The change comes as retailers across Europe grapple with balancing promotional activity with profitability amid rising costs.

Expanded Discount Flexibility
Despite the overall reduction in discount percentages, Coop says it intends to be “even more consistent” in its efforts to combat food waste. A key component of this strategy involves granting store managers greater flexibility in *when* discounts are applied.
Previously, discounts were primarily offered in the hours leading up to store closing. Now, managers will have the authority to initiate markdowns earlier in the day, potentially allowing customers to secure deals on items like meat, fish, and other perishables several days before their best-by dates. “This does not necessarily have to happen only at the latest possible time of sale,” a Coop spokesperson explained.
