Teh Chevrolet Corvette ZR1 is challenging established supercar benchmarks, proving that remarkable performance doesn’t necessarily require an exorbitant price tag. Recent drag racing tests pit the American sports car against the highly-regarded Ferrari 296 GTB, with the Corvette consistently achieving quicker quarter-mile times [[1]]. This head-to-head competition underscores a shifting dynamic in the high-performance automotive market, where value and capability are increasingly competitive factors.
The Chevrolet Corvette continues to offer exceptional value as a sports car, delivering performance that significantly exceeds its price point. Recent improvements have also enhanced its handling and driving dynamics.
The latest iteration of the eighth-generation model, the Corvette ZR1, isn’t inexpensive, but it undercuts the price of the Ferrari 296 GTB – and, according to recent testing, appears to be quicker in a quarter-mile acceleration run.
In the United States, the Corvette ZR1 boasts 234 more horsepower than the 296 GTB, at a price roughly $175,000 (approximately €148,820) lower, and has demonstrated a lap time approximately four-tenths of a second faster on the track. This performance gap highlights the ongoing competition within the high-end sports car market.
Two Sports Cars, Two Approaches
The Chevy is powered by a 5.5-liter, twin-turbocharged LT7 V-8 engine producing 1,064 horsepower and 1,121 Nm of torque. Power is delivered to the rear wheels via an eight-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission.
The Ferrari, in contrast, features the brand’s 3.0-liter twin-turbocharged hybrid V6. It generates 820 horsepower and 740 Nm of torque, also channeled to the rear wheels through an eight-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission.
While the Ferrari is lighter, that advantage wasn’t enough to secure victory in recent acceleration tests…
The Corvette won both races, achieving a quarter-mile time of 9.291 seconds in the first run, as documented by the YouTube channel DragTimes, coming incredibly close to the 8-second mark. The 296 GTB also posted an impressive time of 9.737 seconds in its initial attempt.
Both vehicles were slightly slower in the second run: the Chevy completed the quarter mile in 9.315 seconds, while the Ferrari finished in 9.745 seconds.
