Red Bull Fined Following Pre-Race Grid Breach at United States Grand Prix

Red Bull Racing has been issued a €50,000 fine by the FIA following an incident involving a team member who violated pre-race safety protocols at the United States Grand Prix in Austin yesterday.

The FIA determined that a Red Bull crew member entered the grid area after the formation lap had commenced, a direct breach of regulations designed to ensure track safety. Reports indicate the team member was attempting to interfere with a visual marker used by McLaren’s Lando Norris to aid in his starting position. While the use of such markers is permitted, the timing of the interference – during a critical safety period – prompted the penalty, with half of the fine suspended pending no further incidents in 2025. This incident highlights the intense competition and strategic maneuvering that extends beyond the track in Formula 1.

Pit marshals initially attempted to prevent the team member from entering the restricted area, but were not immediately successful. Red Bull team principal Laurent Mekies addressed the situation, stating, “It was felt that some time during the grid procedures, one of our guys had not followed the officials’ or some marshal’s instructions…. I think it’s probably a misunderstanding there. We went to see the video with the FIA, and for sure it’s something we can do better in the future, but certainly on our side, we do not feel that we have ignored an instruction.” You can find more details about the FIA’s regulations on their official website.

Despite the off-track controversy, Red Bull’s Max Verstappen secured victory in both the sprint and main races at the US Grand Prix, narrowing the gap to championship leader Oscar Piastri to 40 points. The team will review its procedures to prevent similar incidents from occurring in future races, as emphasized by the FIA stewards who stated that any unauthorized presence on the grid after the formation lap is “absolutely prohibited.”
